Form 990 is required in order to maintain your 501c3 tax exempt status.

Failure to file the form 990 will result in the IRS revoking your 501c3 tax exempt status. Over the last several years, the IRS has revoked the tax exempt status of approximately 600,000 tax exempt organizations. If your organization fails to meet filing deadlines, the tax exempt organization will incur penalties and interest.

The form 990N, form 990EZ and form 990 are all informational tax returns that the IRS uses to obtain and maintain information on 501c3 organizations. Your 501c3 organization is required to file the form 990N, form 990EZ or form 990; however, your organization is not required to pay income taxes when filing the return.

Form 990 (including the form 990EZ and form 990N) requires a certain level of expertise.

Floyd Green CPA has served over 8,000 tax exempt organizations and files the form 990 annually for many 501c3 organizations.

The form 990N, form 990EZ and form 990 are very different than any other IRS business or personal tax filing. When you prepare the form 990, the tax filing must clearly show that your organization is a charitable, educational or religious organization. You must include the organization’s activities, programs and accomplishments as proof that you are truly operating as a 501c3 organization as described in the IRS 501c3 tax code. You must provide financial data to the IRS which shows income and expenses, including adequate detail.

When you submit the form 990 or form 990EZ to the IRS, you must include the correct supporting schedules. Your form 990 or form 990EZ will be rejected by the IRS if you do not include the correct schedules along with the form 990. For this reason, it is important that your form 990 include the correct information and detail.
